How To Nail The F*cking Interview
Because it’s not just about getting the job, it’s about making them obsessed with you.
If there’s one thing I can do (let’s be real though, what can’t I do?), it’s ace a damn interview. Interviews are my thing. They’re why I got into my high school (yes, I had to apply) and why I got into Duke. I mean, I had an alumni interview for that, and you know she put in a good word. And it’s how I got my first gig at Refinery29.
At the end of the day, interviews are really no different from dates… lol. Dark, but true. It’s not just about proving your worth or flexing your skillset—it’s about the way you make the person across from you feel. Show them that you care and build a genuine connection, and I promise you’ll stand out every time.
And having been on both sides of the table, I know what it takes to leave an impression. So, here are my top tips for absolutely crushing it the next time you’re in the hot seat.
1. Put on Your SFK Armor 💪
Remember, you’re in the interview because the company needs your skillset to succeed. So, channel your inner Serena Fucking Kerrigan and show up as the most confident version of yourself. This is why men often get jobs they’re not even qualified for—they walk in with that “I’m gonna fucking kill it” attitude, and employers buy into it!
If you’re feeling nervous, act as if you’re playing a character. Pretend you’re in a movie scene, performing as the best, most fearless version of yourself. It’s only 30 minutes, and I guarantee it’ll make a difference.
*Pro Tip* This isn’t the time for fashion experiments. Opt for something clean, professional, and true to your style. If you feel good, you’ll look good.
2. Look Yourself in the Mirror 👀
Right before the interview, make direct eye contact with yourself in the mirror and tell yourself you’re going to crush it. Confidence is key. And if it doesn’t work out? There will be another opportunity. Rejection is redirection. Seriously. I’ve been passed over for countless brand deals, jobs and events, yet every single “no” led me right here, building my own empire.
3. Research Like You’re Stalking Your Ex 🔍
Google the company. Stalk your interviewer on LinkedIn. Find something that connects you both, and work it into the conversation. Maybe they’re from Northern Caroline? Say something like, “Wait, where are you from? Oh, Northern Carolina? I went to Duke—ever been to Durham?” You want to be memorable, and the best way to stand out is to show a little extra effort.
Also, go into the interview with a clear idea of the company’s goals and how you can help achieve them. Make it easy for them to see you as an asset.
4. Remember to Breathe 🌬️
Before you go into the interview, take a deep breath and ground yourself. Nerves are natural, and it’s okay to feel them. Before you log on or walk in, take a few slow breaths, drop your shoulders, and remind yourself of all the prep work you’ve done. You’re not walking into an interrogation—you’re walking into an opportunity to show them why you’re a great fit.
Use the power of pauses! Don’t rush your answers. Take a second to think and breathe. Pauses show confidence and thoughtfulness, two qualities every employer wants.
5. Ask Specific Questions Like… 🗣️
